Day 2  June 11, 2012
We were still in the hospital at this point and I was extremely tired.  I was still having trouble sleeping during the day (I have never been a good napper), so I was just pushing through.  We were still completely drunk in love with our daughter so we were content just sitting with her and hanging out.

Lilly liked to take naps on Mommy and on Daddy

The hospital staff had a “parenting class” that morning that we went to and they basically told us information that we already knew, but it was good to hear it again and be reminded, especially since we were so tired.  We also had two visitors, Sonja and Kelly, who came to meet Lilly and thankfully brought Darren dinner again (and me another milkshake!)  It was so great to see how much they love Lilly already and how much support and love we have from our friends and also our family.

Darren drew this on the board in our hospital room.  A lot of the nurses commented on it.

The night was a little rough because Lilly was spitting up and it was making me upset because I know how important it is for her to eat and gain weight.  We had an amazing night nurse named Elizabeth who made me feel better about the spitting up and told me it was completely normal.  I didn’t get much sleep that night either because I was determined to keep Lilly in the room with us until they needed to take her for her hearing test, jaundice test and heal stick.  Elizabeth did offer to take her, but I kept her in the room.

Day 3  June 12, 2012
We were discharged from the hospital on this day!  It was a little overwhelming and definitely nerve-wracking, but we were ready to be in our own home and our own bed.

We left the hospital around 11:30 after getting all of the paperwork done, and we headed home.  As soon as we got home, Darren literally lay on the floor and just stared at Lilly in her seat.  I was glad I snapped this picture. Once we got settled, Darren headed out to run a few errands (grocery store, pharmacy…etc).  Lilly and I enjoyed a nap together on the recliner, which would become a very regular occurrence for the two of us J  She also took a nap with Daddy on the couch.

Later that evening we had a lot of visitors.  Our friends Antonia and Matt came with their baby boy, Joey, and our friends Chad and Michelle also came with their kids, Allie and Ryan.  It was wonderful to have everyone there.  Antonia had also made us a huge tray of baked ziti, which was amazing for lunch and dinners for several days!  Kalan, our doula, also came to check in with us and to drop off the placenta capsules.  We had a full house and it was a little crazy, but it was great to have so many amazing friends around.

Our first night was pretty unforgettable.  Lilly was sleeping pretty well, but we had an incident that night that left me in tears.  I had brought her into her room to change her diaper and as I was changing her, she started pooping!  Then as I was trying to catch that in a new diaper, she projectile spit up all over the changing pad and the carpet.  I cried out and Darren came in to help.  I cried because I was tired and it was the first big incident we had, but with a big hug from my amazing husband, I pulled myself together quickly and can now laugh about it J

  Day 4  June 13, 2012
We had our first pediatrician appointment on this day at Fuquay Pediatrics.  I was a little out of it from sleep deprivation, but we managed to get to the appointment on time.  While in the waiting room, we ran into a couple that we knew and their new son, Henry.  When they were called in to their appointment, I watched the mom grab a big bag…a diaper bag.  At this point, I realized that I had forgotten to bring a diaper bag!  When we were called into the room and the nurse asked us to strip Lilly down to a clean diaper, I found myself praying that she had a clean diaper because I didn’t have any.  Luckily she did J  When the doctor was checking her, Lilly started to cry, which made me start to cry (just a little).  I think it freaked Darren out a little, but I couldn’t help it.  I just wanted to hold her and I had to sit by and watch her cry.  Plus, she really had not cried much before this, so it was the first time I had heard her really cry out.  I pulled myself together though.  Lilly had gained 1 ounce since being discharged from the hospital (she was now 7 lbs, 14 oz.).  I was glad she had at least gained a little because the doctor did not mention anything about supplementing with formula, which was a big fear I had.

Ready to go to the doctor

 Daddy, don't take my picture!

Lilly would last in a swaddle for about 3 minutes before she would get her arms free
Apparently Lilly was hungry because she latched on to Daddy's nose!
We used the "swaddling blanket for dummies" this night, which has Velcro and instructions to ensure that baby stays swaddled.  She looked like a little pea pod!

Darren had to go to work the next day, so I tried to be super-woman that night and not wake him at all.  I ended up in Darren’s game room on the recliner couch for most of the night and Lilly slept on my chest.  Probably not what doctor’s would recommend, but it was so comfortable for both of us and it allowed Darren to have a full night’s sleep, which he definitely needed.

Day 5  June 14, 2012
Since I was home by myself for the first time, I only have one picture from this day (it is kind of a blur!)  I was running on very little sleep and being alone with a newborn for the first time was intimidating…I wasn’t really thinking too much about pictures ;o)

Day 6  June 15, 2012
We were starting to get into the swing of things today.  We even decided we were ready to go out and take a trip to Walmart and Kohls.  Later that evening, we decided to take a walk with Lilly to introduce her to the neighbors.  It was wonderful getting to introduce her to everyone as they were all so excited for us J  One of our neighbors even tried to jump out of the car while it was still moving because she wanted to meet Lilly so badly.  It’s nice to know she has so many people who love her!

This is Lilly's formal wear.  In case you can't see it, the onesie says "This is my little black dress" and there is a string of pearls painted around the neck.

Day 7  June 16, 2012
We were so excited because Grandma was coming today!!!  I personally could not wait to have my mom there for me for a whole week, and I know Darren was definitely excited as well because he would not have to leave me alone with the baby again.  We were of course, also just excited to see my mom and introduce her to her new granddaughter J  We all went to the airport to pick Grandma up.  Luckily, Lilly is very good in the car.  I think she likes the motion and also the music of the radio.

 Heading to the airport

Cuddling with Grandma for the first (but not the last) time

That night we also gave Lilly her first bath in our house.  It was a lot easier than I thought until she decided to start peeing on Darren.  We have since learned to keep her diaper on until the last minute ;-)

  1. Cute baby! She looks even cuter when she is swaddle in her blanket.
