DAY 15 - June 24, 2012
Lilly is two weeks old today! It’s so hard to believe it has already been
two weeks since she was born. She is
still too small for a lot of her adorable 0-3 month old clothing, so we have
about 10 outfits that we cycle through that fit her well. I was surprised that she still fits into
newborn clothing at this point, but it’s nice that we are getting more than one
use out of some of the adorable outfits people bought us. I love her green watermelon dress (sorry, I
cannot remember who gave this to us!).
This is the outfit we brought her home from the hospital in as
well.
DAY 16 - June 25, 2012
The big news for today was that we met with a potential daycare provider. Our previous situation fell through about two weeks before Lilly was born (no stress there!) and we were very upset about it. I sent an email out to the parents on my team seeking someone to watch her. We had met with two other possibilities who were amazing, but they were asking for a little more than we were looking to pay. We met Kristi today and I immediately knew that she was who I wanted to watch Lilly. She reminded me a lot of myself and who better to be with my baby when I can't be there than someone who is like me??? I also taught her son this year and he is exactly how I would want my children to be when they are in 6th grade. As we were driving away, Darren and I both agreed that we had met Lilly's new babysitter.
We had a visitor today, but again, I did not have the
forethought to take a picture! If you
come to visit, please tell me to take your picture so I remember. I just get so excited to see people and show
off Lilly that I forget! Anyway, our
friend and co-worker Lynn and her beautiful daughter came to visit us today and
they brought us dinner! Let me tell you
the way to a new mom and dad’s hearts…food!
I was literally forgetting to eat sometimes because I was just so preoccupied
with Lilly, so to have someone bring food and remind me to eat dinner is
amazing. Thank you to Carissa for
setting up a meal train for us!
DAY 17 - June 26, 2012
I spent time today going through my closet and sorting
through maternity clothing that I had borrowed (thanks Michelle, Kelly and
Amber!) and also my own clothing. I
wanted to return what I had borrowed and also make room for my regular
clothing. I was so lucky to have friends
who loaned me clothing because maternity clothing is very expensive and since
you only wear it for a few months; I was reluctant to buy much of
anything. It was also just nice for me
to have some time to myself to organize things, which is one of my favorite things
to do. I haven’t taken much time for
myself the past two weeks, so it was great to have this time.
I also thought it would be interesting to see a “before and
after” shot of me at 40 weeks pregnant and then 2 weeks postpartum, and then
with Lilly on my belly. I look at her
sometimes and I still cannot believe that she was “cooking” in my belly for 9
months. Darren and I sometimes just
marvel at the fact that we created this beautiful, amazing little girl. I saw an episode of Grey’s Anatomy once where
a patient said her mom always used to tell her that she made her “from scratch.” The show is cheesy, but I thought this idea
was really sweet. It’s amazing to think
that we are all made “from scratch”.
Two weeks post partum...with Lilly
DAY 18 - June 27, 2012
We had our second doctor’s appointment today with Dr.
Dupuy. I was warned ahead of time that
he is a “talker” so he is often behind on his appointments and we might have to
wait. That was definitely the truth, but
I am happy to say he was well worth the wait!
Darren and I felt so comfortable with him and absolutely loved the way
he was with Lilly. He answered our very
long list of questions and never made us feel bad about keeping him for 30
minutes or asking questions that probably seemed obvious to a doctor. He also showed us a new way to swaddle Lilly
and recommended that we try to swaddle her at night because it helps to calm
and sooth newborns. The bad part was
that this appointment went so late that we were late going to the airport to
pick up Jess, who arrived today!
It was so exciting to have Jess here. Jess and I have been friends since sophomore
year in college and we’ve always managed to stay close. She and I have the uncanny ability to just
sit and talk for hours and not ever get bored of each other or our
conversations, which is good because most of what we would do would be sitting
around and talking, since it’s hard to do much else with a newborn. I remember telling Jess when I first saw her
how much I loved her shoes (pink glitter Toms).
Little did I know, Jess brought some gifts with her including Lilly’s
very own pair of pink glitter Toms! She
also bought Darren a mug and Lilly and I mother/daughter necklaces. Having her here was gift enough, but it was
very sweet that she wanted to celebrate with us with some very generous
gifts.
Kelly made our night by visiting us and bringing Chick-fil-A for dinner and Gigi's cupcakes for dessert! We were very thankful for the food and it was so great to see Kelly.
Getting ready to go to the doctor and then to pick up Aunt Jekah!
Aunt Jekah gets some cuddle time with Lilly
We tried out the "Dupuy Swaddle Method" tonight and it worked amazingly well! We started calling Lilly "baby burrito" because she was perfectly wrapped up!
DAY 19 - June 28, 2012
Jess and I ventured to Aldi and Walmart with Lilly today to
get groceries for the week while Darren was at work. It was nice to get out of the house, but
nicer to have Jess with me. She was such
a huge help and it made me so much more confident when we left the house. We also made a stop of Dunkin Donuts to get
some iced coffee. I went through the
drive through and as I was placing our order, Jess reminded me that it was 2 o’clock
and we might want to also get food (remember what I said before about
forgetting to eat?). I was placing our
order and Lilly started fussing, which made it very difficult to concentrate
and hear what the woman taking our order was saying. I think I must have told her two creams and
one sugar in my iced coffee 5 times because she couldn’t hear me. Thank goodness Jess jumped into the back to
give Lilly her pacifier otherwise I might have gotten overwhelmed and just
left.
That evening was fairly mild (unlike the rest of the week!)
so we decided to take a walk around the neighborhood. We ran into our neighbor Matt who wanted us
to come and say Hi to his wife so she could meet Lilly. She was 9 months pregnant and due the next
day, so she was very excited and ready to have her own baby girl!
Lilly enjoys hanging out in her swing...for about 10 minutes at a time
It was a long day of shopping, so Lilly needed a nice nap
DAY 20 - June 29, 2012
Today was the final day of school, so Darren was at work and
Jess and I decide to take Lilly into school to visit Darren and also to meet
our students. I was a little nervous
bringing her in because I knew that everyone would be swooning over her (how
could they not???), but my teammates told the kids how to behave ahead of time
and I was confident that they would listen because they were such a good
group.
As soon as we walked into the office the office staff met
Lilly and were very excited to see her.
Then about 5 parents from my team saw us and came rushing into the office. I knew these parents very well, so I was glad
they were able to meet Lilly. The kids
started walking by and were very excited to see me and Lilly in the office, but
I motioned for them to go to the classrooms because I would be bringing her
down. Before that, we went upstairs to
say Hi to Darren and his teammates.
Kelly and Sonya had already met Lilly, but Carole was very excited to
see her (and she had dinner for us!!)
We then went down to visit all of my students. We took Lilly (in her stroller) into each
classroom and allowed all of the kids to look at her (but not touch her!) They were so excited to see her and not a
single student needed to be told to keep their voice down or not to touch her J I was so proud of them! I also got a chance to get some great hugs
and sign some yearbooks for the kids. I
really loved this group of students, so I was thankful that I had a chance to
say goodbye.
We also brought Lilly upstairs again to meet Darren’s
students (who I taught last year). They
weren’t quite as excited as my students, but I think that is just a 6th
to 7th grade difference.
After school we met Darren and several coworkers out at My
Way Tavern in Holly Springs. Everyone
was very excited to see Lilly and she behaved perfectly the entire time.

Day 21 - June 30, 2012
Today was our staff picnic at Harris Lake. Unfortunately, it was also record
temperatures, hitting 104 degrees.
Darren and I agreed that we would make an appearance and stay as long as
we felt comfortable with Lilly. I was
very nervous from the start, but I really wanted to see everyone, so we
went. We came prepared with cold washcloths
that we had in a small cooler, and we dressed Lilly is a very light dress. When we first arrived, it wasn’t too hot, but
the temperatures quickly climbed and the humidity did not quit. Jess was amazing and held Lilly while I got
some food and was great about keeping her cool with the washcloths. Darren was trying to organize a corn hole
tournament, so he was pretty busy; if I didn’t have Jess with me, I would have
been very overwhelmed. Michelle came to
visit with us as well and offered to hold Lilly as well, but I started to get
too nervous and decided it was time to go.
We stayed for less than an hour, but at least we tried.
We spent the rest of the day hanging out in the A/C at home
watching movies on HBO. When we got home
I stripped Lilly down to cool her off and she bounced back immediately. I think I was more uncomfortable with the
situation than she was, but that’s the nature of being a new mom.
This is one of my favorite pictures of Lilly. She has such personality in this picture!
Cooling off!
